BASILICA OF SAINTS PETER AND PAUL

EST. 1936
As told by Father Patrick J. Finn

TO KNOW LOVE

With nearly 7,000 weddings between 1873 and 1936 alone, and likely hundreds of thousands more since then, it’s evident that this Basilica holds a special place in the hearts of many couples. Its rich history and role as a backdrop for countless weddings undoubtedly contribute to its iconic status.

The Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul is the most distinctive building in the city of Lewiston, the largest church building in Maine, and among the largest in New England. Its twin Gothic spires—lit at night and visible for miles, including from the Maine Turnpike—have anchored the Lewiston skyline, reaching heavenward since the church’s completion in 1936. Its foundation, the lower church, was completed in 1907 after a previous red-brick church built in 1873 had proved too small for the burgeoning Catholic community arriving daily from Québec and elsewhere.

The Basilica is a living, breathing house of worship—the spiritual home of thousands of Catholics and an ever-present reminder of the eternal for all who look upon it. This remarkable edifice has played host to countless meetings of God with His holy people: thousands of baptisms, First Holy Communions, Confirmations, weddings, and funerals, as well as innumerable moments of prayer at every possible occasion of joy and sorrow—like the “OneLewiston” Vigil, when more than 4,000 people came together to mourn those lost in the tragedy of October 25, 2023.

Clearly, the history of the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul isn’t just the chronicle of an old church, but of the amazing faith of the French-Canadian immigrants whose struggles, patience, and great generosity built it. It reflects an aspect of the immigrant experience that has played out over and over across the United States.

In this way, the history of Saints Peter and Paul is an invaluable chapter on the history of this nation, a reality reflected in the enrollment of the church on the National Register of Historic Places on July 14, 1983.

A massive, years-long restoration project began in 1991 with the repointing of the North Jay granite blocks of the church’s exterior, continuing with renovating the upper church in 2002 and the lower church in 2007 (ongoing even today). Saints Peter and Paul Parish joined the other Catholic churches in Lewiston in 2009 to become part of Prince of Peace Parish, which also incorporated churches in Sabattus and Lisbon Falls in 2020. The need of every human heart is to know Love, and Prince of Peace Parish stands ready to help you find or rediscover the love of God.

Father Patrick J. Finn is a Catholic priest, ordained in 2018, who has served as parochial vicar (assistant priest) at Prince of Peace Parish since August 2020. Though raised in Bath, he is part of the sixth generation of his family to call Lewiston home.
